8A Solving the Problem

The problem that we are facing is that there is a large amount of food waste that affects single
individuals. Grocery stores do not offer a single portion option. This lack of availability causes the
individual to spend more money on larger portion supplies initially. Then, when that individual is
unable to eat the food before it spoils, they have to throw it away, along with the money they spent
on the excess. If they plan ahead with meal prep, they often quickly tire of the food before the week
is done. If they decide to store it, they’re may not be enough room. If they live with others and decide
to share, they may not like the same foods or there may be problems with splitting the cost.

My proposed solution is to use the same products, just split them in smaller packages, allowing the
individual to purchase a smaller portion. This way they can avoid wasting excess food and they can
purchase more of a variety of food, with the same volume of food overall.

  1. Wow Nancy! Someone had to say it. I think this is an absolutely brilliant idea. In fact, pillsbury has finally started making smaller portions of their crescent rolls, biscuits, and cinnabons. As a student who typically only cooks for myself or my girlfriend, those 4 counts are so much better than wasting a bunch in the 8 count. It saves money, and food. I loved this post, and hope more companies can do something like this.

  2. The solution is nice and simple, so one would think that companies could easily hop on board and adopting your solution. However, I would think bigger than only students as the target group to make the solution for attractive, which I assume you have. One thing to consider in the development of the solution is people's price flexibility. Most likely the price per pound will be higher for smaller packages, so it is essential to know how much more the customers would be willing to pay. Another thing to think about is how small to make the portions. Some may want single-meal portions and others may want some leftovers too, so in order to attract the companies to make your solution and also customers to buy your solution, maybe a compromise is possible in size.

  3. This is a great product idea Nancy ! Especially for college kids that are living on their own, this would be a product that would be in demand. I myself know that I end up having to throw away food, and thus money, quite frequently. All of the portions that supermarkets sell are much too large. Because of this, I will either grow tired of the food and not want to eat it, or I will not be able to finish it all because of the occasional night of going out to eat. I love the idea of smaller portioned food!

  4. Hi Nancy,
I think that this is a great idea and that there is a large market for people who have similar issues. College students, alone, could easily make this market explode and create a vast amount of revenue. As I mentioned before in one of your posts, more and more people in todays society are choosing to stay single as they grow older. This could not only make the entrepreneur money but it would also help single people save a lot of money. Excited to see what is to come from this idea, have a great week.
