19A- Idea Napkin #2

1) You. Since my senior year in high school I have had experience as a part of a large, innovative business. I have worked at a Chick-fil-A restaurant for 3 years now, as the graphics and social media marketing specialist. I have a extensive experience with customer service and promoting food products. My experience with food service and marketing makes me understand the production side of this product. As a single college student, I am also able to understand the
2) What are you offering to customers? The product I am proposing is smaller portioned food and ingredients sold in grocery stores. This allows for single individuals to cook for themselves, without wasting any products. This product is unique, because other food product companies are not concerned or empathetic to your waste problem. They sell products in oversized portions, without concern for the individuals needs. The only products currently offered are microwaveable meals, whether frozen or prepackaged. However, this doesn't allow for sufficient nutrition or health foods. Most vegetables, meats, grain products, and dairy products are sold in large packages.
3) Who are you offering it to? The best demographic to offer this product to is singles individuals, especially college students. College students struggle with money, so they are perfect for a cheaper, smaller portion.
4) Why do they care? Customers already buy food, and this product actually saves money and prevents wasteful buying of food. The individuals that I have spoken to are already frustrated and disappointed with this problem, so I believe they would be willing to try to fix it with this product.
5) What are your core competencies? What sets us apart is that we would actually save people money in the long run. The only companies that I have found that have food products individually packaged are boxes of ingredients, for the receiver to cook. This option, however, does not allow for freedom of cooking and enjoyment, while also being really expensive. While the cost per unit may be a couple cents more, the product will be cheaper overall and the amount of money saved by not wasting products makes up for the difference.

I do believe that these elements fit together well. My competencies and the customer needs both point towards this product, and the problems it solves. The feedback I received had to do with the cost of the product as well as its uniqueness. I knew this type of product was rare or non-existent, because I personally feel the effects of lacking this type of product. However, through this feedback, I was able to put more research into its lack of existence, which benefitted my idea napkin.

  1. Nancy,

I did notice that you used heavily your previous idea napkin, however, I appreciate that you made the effort to elaborate more several parts. Since understanding the customers is so essential for success, I would have wished that you had described the customers in more detail. You mentioned them being tight on money, so understanding if they would actually prefer cheaper products while getting less for the money is actually preferred above lower price per unit. I am also very curious how you came to the conclusion on the price increase only being a couple of cents, as I would have assumed it being more significant. I don't know though!

  2. Hey there Nancy,
I believe as well that your skills and background would fit together nicely to provide a successful product such as the smaller portioned meals. Working in the food industry, and Chick-Fil-A especially, shows how much people desire single proportion meals, since that is a related product. However, there are no such healthy alternatives as you mentioned. I do believe the product would be succesful, as there are almost no other competitors on the market as of now.

  3. Hi Nancy,

The skills you mentioned as well as your job experience mesh very well with the product idea that you wish to make a reality. You did well further explaining your product and mentioned the various "complaints" that were given to you via peer reviews. I think that single portioned meals are a necessity for many people in today's society and that you have a great idea on your hands.
